Overview
Pursuit is a solo Unreal Engine short film by UK‑based designer and filmmaker Steve Jones. It channels the raw energy of Formula 1 and the obsession behind perfection into cinematic, photoreal motion graphics. exploring the mindset of a Formula 1 driver, immersed in flow, chasing perfection. It also reflects my own creative obsession: capturing emotion, adrenaline and movement through digital filmmaking.
a solo project from concept to execution. Built in Unreal Engine, and edited and sound-designed in DaVinci Resolve.
The story behind the film
Formula 1 has long been a personal obsession - the drama, the speed, the emotion. This film is inspired by the Williams F1 team, a legendary name in motorsport that once dominated the grid but has since faced years of challenge and rebuilding. Today, they are in a relentless pursuit to rise again.
That idea of reclaiming greatness became the emotional engine for the film. Just like the team, I’m in my own pursuit - building something ambitious, driven by passion and persistence.
Pursuit centres on the inner world of the driver. Not the glory. Not the team radio. Just the quiet intensity behind the visor. It’s about obsession, focus and precision. The unbreakable mental state required when your life depends on your ability to be the best. No mistakes. No second chances. It’s about finding flow in the chaos.
And in many ways, it’s about me too, as an artist chasing creative mastery, pushing myself to make digital filmmaking feel alive, visceral and emotionally true.
Craft and execution
Every frame was crafted with the aim of merging realism and emotion. Built entirely in Unreal Engine, the film pushes the visual limits of digital filmmaking:
Cinematography and animation: Designed and executed in Unreal Engine to mimic the energy of live-action race photography. Dynamic tracking shots, aggressive cuts and dramatic light shifts were used to capture adrenaline and movement.
Black Eye Technologies: I collabed with Black eye to test their intelligent camera plugin. This allowed me to get real-time dynamic, authentic to real camera cinematography - more on this to come.
Editing and colour: Cut and graded in DaVinci Resolve for a cinematic, immersive feel. The blue and orange palette represents both heat and control - the searing speed of the machine against the calculated calm of the driver’s mindset. It’s a world where instinct and intellect collide.
Sound design: Custom-designed to heighten tension and immersion. No dialogue. Just machine, man and motion. Sound becomes the pulse of the story.
This was a completely independent production. Every frame, every sound and every decision was made by one person, me, working alone.
Why it matters
Pursuit isn’t just a film about speed. It’s about translating feeling into form. It’s proof that with the right mindset, even one person alone can recreate something as intense and visceral as adrenaline - using nothing but pixels.
